Cheap Air Travel Tickets

While flying is not as inexpensive as it once was, there are various techniques you can use to find cheap air travel tickets. For example you can fly to and from smaller airports, use one of the discount airlines, travel through the night or use one of the many different internet travel sites to find a cool last minute deal.
US Airways and United Airlines both reported falling traffic / capacity for the month of November, due to cuts made by carriers to meet the weakening demand for air travel. United Airlines reported a 17 percent drop in revenue passenger miles (RPMs), which went from 9 billion to 7.47 billion. US Airways dropped roughly 7 percent in revenue passenger miles, falling to 4.26 billion from 4.57 billion. According to the AP, United’s pacific flights RPMs dropped nearly 20 percent in the past month. Available seat miles have fallen nearly 14 percent for United in the past year, and approximately 6 percent for US Airways. Load factors for the two carriers fell - 2.7 percent (to 76.9 percent) for United Airlines, and 0.7 percent (to 77.7 percent) for US Airways.

As passenger demand for air travel decreases, we can expect more cuts for the industry. The trend is as follows: bad economy means lower oil prices, as well as lower demand for air travel. Does lower oil prices mean less demand for air travel? Not always, but sometimes. Airlines across the board are cutting capacity. There are advantages to airlines, such as better on-time performance; a smaller amount of flights in the federal air traffic system means less congestion. It’s not a bad time to fly right now, but it’s not good for those employed in the industry.

USAirways kicked off a sale yesterday that was quickly matched by competitors. But the important part of this sale is that there is no ticket date published with the bargain rates - meaning the deals might only hang around for a few more hours. However, participating AirTran tags a date of November 11 as the last date to buy tickets. That date might stick, but then again it might not if other airlines don’t follow along. The best tip to pass along is that if you see a deal you must have - buy tickets today.

Here’s the list of the bargain one-way prices valid on trips finished on or before February 11:

• $49 New Orleans

• $54 Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Flint, Pittsburgh, Rochester, St. Louis

• $59 Philadelphia, Washington DC

• $64 Houston

• $69 Dallas, Islip, Milwaukee, New York-LaGuardia, San Antonio

• $74 Burlington, Cincinnati*, Portland ME

• $94 Phoenix

• $104 Austin

These prices are valid on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday when tickets are booked with a two-week or more advance notice.

Add a minimum of $20 more each way for travel on Monday, Thursday or Friday (trips on Sundays are at regularly published prices).

Now for the not so good news. Each participating airline posts a number of blackout dates when these one-way rates are not valid.

USAirways restricts the use of sale rates on November 30; December 1, 27 and January 3.

AirTran blackouts include November 26; November 29-December 1, 20, 21, 23, 26-30 and January 3, 4.

American Airline blackouts are November 26, 29, 30; December 1, 20-30 and January 3, 4.

Dates to avoid on Continental and United are November 26, 29, 30; December 1, 20-30 and January 2-4.

Delta blackouts are November 25, 26, 29, 30; December 19-21, 26, 28 and January 2-4.

Northwest blackouts include November 25, 26, 29, 30; December 1 and December 18-January 5.
